The Abel SDF (Sealed Drag Fresh) 6/7 Ported took home Best of Show at the 2017 ICAST/IFTD industry trade show and was named Best New Freshwater Reel of 2018 by Fly Fisherman Magazine. After Abel’s move to Colorado, the trout-rich surroundings inspired the team to take their legendary engineering to the next level — and the SDF is the result.
Based on the award-winning SDS (Sealed Drag Salt), the SDF is a scaled-down freshwater version featuring similar porting and a stainless steel / carbon fluoropolymer drag system. The SDF delivers an enormous amount of drag, an adjustment range nearly three times greater than its predecessor, and virtually zero startup inertia — meaning the drag engages instantly and smoothly the moment a fish runs. The 6/7 weight makes it ideal for larger trout, steelhead, and light saltwater applications.
Abel took everything learned from the SDS design, added their unmistakable fit and finish, and built the finest freshwater reel they’ve ever produced. The Native Rainbow finish with matching drag knob and ebony handle makes this configuration a true collector’s piece.
