Fly of the Month for May is Dave Hughes' Grizzly and Gray Flymph -Size 12
A Flymph is a pattern that can immitate both a fly and a nymph. This pattern from Dave Hughes' 2015 "Wet Flies" is an all purpose fly that doesn't look exactly like anything, but looks enough like a lot of things to be effective.
I can attest to the effectiveness of this fly, because l've fished it in my pond the past month. It not only caught its share of my plentifull bluegill, but also caught more of my more illusive crappie than I've caught in a while, and it even fooled two of my nice hard-to-catch bass
- one of which measured 19 inches and I'm guessing around four pounds. I can't wait to try it on trout!
This is an easy pattern to tie, and if you don't have the exact materials called for in the recipe, you can easily substitute just about any gray dubbing and hen hackle you have on hand.
We'll be tying up Flymphs at our next Sipping and Tying event this coming Monday, May 6, at the Draft and Table Resturant in North Little Rock. The fun starts at 6 o'clock, and we'll supply all the materials to add this very effectice pattern to your flybox.
