Exterior finishes are very demanding to create and the reality of protecting an exterior project is that every finish fails! What makes an exterior project last is using quality products with a timely re- application. If you aren’t going to maintain the exterior finish, don’t bother finishing it at all. Sutherland Welles Ltd Marine Spar Varnish is the perfect topcoat for any exterior project that you want best protection and high gloss. Sutherland Welles Ltd Marine Varnish is a combination of a high-quality Phenolic resin that creates a durable surface as well as the spectacular gloss. We add our Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil to the formulation to give the surface film that builds elasticity which helps the Spar to protect the surface with all the expansion and contraction cycles the finish goes through in different daily and seasonal exposures.
The process begins with two coats of Exterior Tung Oil Sealer which penetrates deep into the wood and becomes the anchor to the flexibility of the Varnish. The second coat of Exterior Sealer includes some of the Sutherland Welles Ltd Marine Spar Varnish and then subsequent coats are full strength Sutherland Welles Ltd Marine Spar Varnish.
It’s important to apply multiple, thin coats and allow adequate time in between coats for curing. Lack of through dry on a Varnish coat is often the most significant issue that causes quick coating failure.
