The Box Elder is found mostly in central and eastern United States. Sapwood is a pale white, sometimes with a yellow/green hue. The heartwood is a grayish/yellowish brown, frequently with red or pink streaks. The red stain is produced by the tree’s natural defenses when wounded. A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. It may be caused by an injury, virus or fungus. Burls yield a highly unique wood grain.
