Sunday, February 18, fly fishing guide Danny Barker from Mountain Home, Arkansas will lead a Guide Flies Tying Clinic at the AGFC Witt Stephens Nature Center Little Rock. Danny will demonstrate tying some of his guide flies used on the White and Norfork Tailwaters. He will showcase flies tailored for high water and those employed during low water fly fishing. You can sign up here.
What are ‘Guide Flies’? Guide Flies have two principal characteristics A) they are DEPENDABLY EFFECTIVE at putting clients on fish and B) they are UNCOMPLICATED, QUICK patterns to tie. Put simply, they are efficient patterns that prioritize fishing time and fish catching.
You will not want to miss this clinic since AFF’s February meeting the next day will feature Danny. Danny will briefly discuss his life of fishing and Euro Nymphing techniques. He will share insights into the flies he ties for both high water and low water conditions on the White and Norfork Tailwaters. Danny will elaborate on the rigging he employs to fish two flies, whether tight line or with a suspension indicator. One of his specialties, drop shot nymphing or bottom bouncing, will also be highlighted for fly fishing in these waters.
The tactics and techniques he will discuss on Monday will show how to take advantage of the flies he has walked participants through on Sunday!
Don't have your own tying equipment but curious about tying? AFF has a limited number of high-quality Regal vises and tying tools available. Otherwise, participants are expected to bring a vise, basic tying tools, and appropriate thread (some like bringing a small light). AFF provides the other needed materials. Participants are able to see a live, magnified video of the instructor's fly throughout.
AFF has been extremely fortunate to have the support of Kim Dollins' Ryders Run Guide Service and Cody Griffin's Fin & Feather Fly Fishing the last few years as part of our annual membership drive. They have generously donated guided trips to two lucky members!
Here’s how the chance to win a guided trip works…every individual who purchases a 2024 Household Membership by the March 18 monthly meeting will be entered into drawings for a half day guided trips with Kim and Cody (including those who have already purchased their 2024 membership). Many of you already know or have had the opportunity to meet Kim and Cody at an AFF event. If you have talked with them or have seen them on the river, you know they are passionate about the sport and love sharing their experience with fly fishers of all skill levels.
The support we get from sponsors like Kim and Cody and from fundraisers are how we are able to provide high quality monthly speakers and events, support to programs we all care about (things like Project Healing Waters, Casting for Recovery, the Mayfly Project, youth camps, etc.), casting and tying clinics, womens’ and other AFF events. Without sufficient membership dues, the funds from sponsorships and fundraising efforts are necessarily directed to meet our basic obligations.
We say all of that so that you understand the importance of membership. So please renew or join today—especially since guided trips are on the table!
